관조적 사유 (觀照的 思惟)
관조 觀照와 사유의 사전적 의미를 찾아보면
관조 觀照
1.고요한 마음으로 사물이나 현상을 관찰하거나 비추어 봄. 2.예술 미(美)를 직접적으로 인식하는 일. 3.지혜로 모든 사물의 참모습과 나아가 영원히 변하지 않는 진리를 비추어 봄.
사유 思惟 1.대상을 두루 생각하는 일. 2.철학 개념, 구성, 판단, 추리 따위를 행하는 인간의 이성 작용 등으로 설명 하고 있다.
시대가 발전하여 너도나도 세계화로 하나 되는 컨템포러리contemporary 양상에 처한 요즘 내 몸속에 흐르는 한국적 정서와 감성에서 벗어날 수 없음을 두고 많은 생각과 고민 중에 해결점을 우리 전통 문화에서 찾을 수 있었다. 우리의 선조들의 그림이나 예술품들을 보고 발견한 것들인데 놀랍게도 지극히 관조적 이고 사유적 이라는 것이다. 고요한 마음으로 사물이나 현상을 관찰하고 여러방법을 다하여 영원한 진리를 찾아가는 일 그것이야말로 예술의 지향점이기때문이다.
내마음속에 흐르는 한국적 감성을 어떤 형식에 가두지 않고 자유롭게 표현하고 싶었다. 한국적 감성을 어느 한두가지 방법으로 어찌 표현 할 수 있겠는가. 소박하고 무심한듯하면서도 단아한 아름다움이 고품격의 격조를 이루는 그 무엇이 존재하고 있다. 그것이 무엇일까. 우리 선조들의 음양 오행의 이치나 성리학등 동양철학에서 베어나오는 사유적인 한국적 감성이라고 생각한다. 풍류정신. 요즘 유행하는 한류라고 해도 좋겠다.
나의 작품들이 한가지의 주제나 표현방법에 구속되어 있지 않은 이유이기도 하다. 때로는 자체의 아름다움을 포착해서 사실적으로 표현하기도 하고 내안의 에너지나 격한 감정이 솟구칠때면 표현주의 기법으로 감성에 맞겨 표현하기도 한다. 눈에 보이지 않는 영성이나 감각적 감성을 그때그때 변화하는 대로 추상적으로 표현 하기도 한다. 스스로 어떠한 틀이나 방법적 형식에 가두어 스스로 구속되고 싶지 않은것이다.
내게 중요한것은 표현방법이 아니라 표현주제인 것이요. 한국적 감성을 관조(contemplate) 적으로 바라보고 사유하는것이다.
Contemplative Thought
If you look for the definition of the word “contemplation” and “thought”, To contemplate means to 1) observe an object or a phenomena with a quiet mind; 2) actively recognize an aesthetic; 3) use wisdom to reflect upon the true aspects of all entities and everlasting truths. The word “thought” means 1) a thorough meditation about things; 2) human reasons to conceptualize, structure, judge, and infer.
In a constantly changing world where everyone flows in globalization and is united under the “contemporary” umbrella, I have recognized that I was still unable to fully escape from my uniquely Korean sentiment. After much thought and reflection, I have found the solution from our traditional culture.
I have derived the solution from viewing the paintings and other artworks of our ancestors, and I was very surprised to find that all of them were products of contemplation and thought, as observing individual entities and phenomena with a quiet mind and using different methods to reach an eternal truth is what an art shall seek.
I wanted to freely express my Korean sentiment without bounding it in a particular structure. How could you convey the Korean sentiment in only one or two ways? It is something that is simple and indifferent yet is elevated by a graceful, elegant style of art.
What could that be? I believe that it comes from the Korean spirit of our ancestors, their historical roots including but not limited to the Yin-Yang theory and the five elements, along with other oriental philosophies. It is a spirit of tradition; an example could be the contemporary Korean Wave. This is why my artworks are not bound by a single theme or technique. There are times when I capture the raw beauty of something and express it realistically; there are also times when I rely on expressionist techniques to reveal my energy and strong emotions; finally, there are other times when I express spiritual qualities and sentiments through abstract forms and styles. I simply do not want to restrict myself in a particular way.
For me, it is more important to focus on the theme than the techniques, and to contemplate and deeply think about the Korean sentiment.
